Bafana Bafana youngster Mbekezeli Mbokazi is set to join Chicago Fire in January following his exploits in the Premier Soccer League.

The 20-year-old was introduced to the top-level football in March, and has since grown rapidly to represent South Africa across all competitions. As a matter of facts, he will be in the squad that will be in Morocco from December 21 to January 18 for the Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON.

Kaizer Chiefs legend Doctor Khumalo has warned that the Major League Soccer is strong as opposed to what a majority of the fans think.

MLS is stronger now

Doctor Khumalo played for Colombus Crew in the 1996/97 season, albeit on loan from Kaizer Chiefs. Shaun Bartlett was also in the same league but turning out for Shaun Bartlett.

“When I played in the US, it was 1996, I think that’s when the MLS started and myself and Shaun Bartlett were the two players that came from South Africa,” Khumalo told the 10Bet Podcast.

“I guess the competitiveness of their league it was not that much stronger the way it is now because we looking at big names that are there.”

“I strongly believe that he has gone to a team that is gonna properly challenge him and grow as a player.

“Because I can imagine playing against [Lionel] Messi and other big names that are there in the USA. I know a lot of people they don’t respect the MLS, but I can tell you, that it is a competitive league.

“For him to be going to Chicago I think it will be a blessing in disguise for him to go and start there and probably in years to come he can venture into Europe.”
