Eskom dim lights on Gavin Hunt’s landmark 1,000th match

Gavin Hunt’s 1000th game as a coach in the top flight did not go according to plan as the game was abandoned due to loadshedding.

Hunt’s SuperSport United had got off to a great start when on-loan Kaizer Chiefs striker Christian Saile gave them a fourth-minute lead against Golden Arrows at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Sunday.

However, after 22 minutes, the match was halted after the lights started failing. The contest would resume after which Arrows equalised through Velemseni Ndwandwe but the match was called off at the break when lights were still not working.

“Match has been suspended. We’ll keep you updated as soon as we have more details,” SuperSport posted on X.

What led to the abandonment?

“The game has been called off after just 45 minutes of play. The players have not returned to the field for the second half, with the referee coming onto the field to call the game off.  We will update you ASAP on the way forward,” was the message from Golden Arrows.

It is not clear if the match will resume on Monday, with the PSL not providing updates, but it was a sour taste in the mouth for Hunt, who was looking for back-to-back wins, as he marked a major milestone.

The SuperSport coach was taking charge of his 1000th top flight game and was looking to mark it with a win after his side thrashed Kaizer Chiefs 4-1 in his 999th game in midweek.
