Evidence Makgopa, the Orlando Pirates forward who was once Bafana Bafana’s primary striker, has spoken about being consistently overlooked by coach Hugo Broos.
The decision has been tough, but Makgopa says it's fueled his ambition to fight for a return to the national team.
Makgopa's value to the national team was clear at the 2024 AFCON.
He was the go-to striker, starting every one of Bafana Bafana’s seven games in the tournament. He was a central figure in their surprising run, which included a momentous 2-0 win against Morocco in the Round of 16. In that match, Makgopa scored a critical goal, helping his team knock out one of the strongest teams in the competition.
With a total of 18 caps, four goals, and one assist for Bafana Bafana, Makgopa’s contributions are well-documented.

He believes that being left out of the squad has been an “eye-opener,” pushing him to put in the extra work needed to once again become a regular for his country. His goal is simple: to prove that he still belongs among the nation's best.
‘MAYBE IT'S AN EYE OPENER'
“Obvious, I just have to work hard to go back to the national team,” said Makgopa.
“I think maybe it’s an eye opener so that I can keep working hard or something.”
Makgopa's club form has mirrored his recent Bafana Bafana struggles. The Orlando Pirates striker has yet to score this season, despite featuring in six matches across all competitions.
This includes four appearances in the Betway Premiership and one in the MTN8. Makgopa will be looking to find his scoring boots to force his way back into national team contention.
