Ex-Bafana Bafana captain Thulani Hlatshwayo joins new PSL club

A wave of experienced talent is descending upon Durban City FC as the newly-promoted Betway Premiership side meticulously prepares for its challenging debut season in South Africa's top flight.

Among the most prominent new arrivals is former SuperSport United defensive stalwart, Thulani Hlatshwayo.

The 35-year-old centre-back, a former Bafana Bafana captain, has joined Durban City on a free transfer following the conclusion of his contract with Matsatsantsa, a move that happened at the same time with the sale of SuperSport United's status and the end of their significant 30-year era.

HLATSHWAYO REUNITES WITH GAVIN HUNT

This transfer also sets the stage for a much-anticipated reunion between Hlatshwayo and his former mentor, coach Gavin Hunt, with whom he previously enjoyed successful spells at Bidvest Wits and SuperSport United.

Hlatshwayo's presence was visibly noted as he attended Durban City's pre-season friendly against Golden Arrows in Durban, although he did not participate in the match.

Beyond Hlatshwayo, Durban City is strategically bringing in a cadre of seasoned players to fortify their squad. As previously reported, former Cape Town City star Thabo Nodada was a notable participant in the friendly against Arrows, indicating his commitment to the KZN side.

Nodada has since been reunited with two of his former Cape Town City teammates: Haashim Domingo and goalkeeper Darren Keet. Both Domingo and Keet made the switch to Durban City at the start of the week, having also departed Cape Town City in the wake of their relegation to the Motsepe Foundation Championship via the PSL Promotional/Relegation Playoffs.

Adding to this influx of experience is Brooklyn Poggenpoel, who, like Hlatshwayo, also spent last season at SuperSport United.

These collective movements paint a clear picture of Durban City's comprehensive approach to building a competitive team, emphasizing the acquisition of seasoned professionals who understand the rigors of top-flight football, ensuring they are well-equipped to tackle the demands of the upcoming Betway Premiership campaign.
