A former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper has confirmed that he’s in talks with Mamelodi Sundowns over a goalkeeping coach role at the club.
Masandawana have been making adjustments to their first team technical staff in response to the recent developments within the club.
However, this time around, they want to bolster the goalkeeping department coaching team in the youth structures.
The talks are underway with ex-Maritzburg United goalkeeper Shu-Aib Walters, whom they are looking to bring on board.
Walters currently runs his academy dedicated to discovering and developing the potential of young goalkeepers before facilitating their transition to professional clubs.
He said he is waiting for the club to return from their pre-season tour in Austria before discussing the next steps in their negotiations.
SUNDOWNS TO ROPE IN EX-MARITZBURG & BAFANA IN YOUTH STRUCTURES
“I'm still waiting for Sundowns to get back from their pre-season tour, we're just waiting on something concrete,” Walters told KickOff.
“But yes, I can confirm we are talking. It will be in the development, that's where my passion is, that's where l have seen a lot of success.
“I have got two goalkeepers from Shu-Aib
Walters Goalkeeping Academy playing in the DDC [DStv Diski Challenge] and one in the NFD, and there's one I have sent to the Sundowns U17, his name is Luke.
“I think that's where l'm valuable [development] that's where my passion is now. It's where I feel I can add value.
“There's also one other boy who is gonna sign with SuperSport [United], he is also one of my goalkeepers from my academy. He recently got the Engen Goalkeeper of the Tournament [award] – his name is Colby Sinclair.
“For me, my wish is to have a goalkeeper that can compete in one of the bigger stages. I would like to produce a future Itumeleng Khune and a future Ronwen Williams.
“Both goalkeepers were produced at the age of 13 and it has never happened again.
“So, regarding Sundowns, I should have some concrete answers on the weekend.”
