Ex-Chiefs keeper William Shongwe identifies where Fiacre Ntwari falls short

Former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper William Shongwe feels Rwandan shot stopper Fiacre Ntwari still has a lot of things to improve on at the club before he can be considered among the best.

Ntwari joined Chiefs from TS Galaxy in the off-season and is the man that has been trusted between the posts by coach Nasreddine Nabi but there have been questions over his decision making in some matches.

The goalkeeper has managed just one clean sheet in seven games while shipping in 11 goals and although some of it is also down to the team’s defence, Shongwe has identified key areas that have not impressed him which he believes can turn the Rwandan into a top player.

“Chiefs signed a good goalkeeper in Ntwari; he’s playing for his national team as well, but the only place where I can actually blame him is his attributes,” Shongwe told FARPost.

“His saving, decision-making and ball distribution are not quality. He lacks the quality of [Itumeleng] Khune, but I’m not comparing him with Khune.

“That’s where I can put a finger on him; for me, that’s something he should improve on. I think the coaches should plan and come up with a solution for this.

What are coach Nabi’s goalkeeping options?

“If he improves on that, he may become one of the top keepers in this league. They can do better. I know the coaches are still new at the club; they are still learning, but the pressure is mounting.”

Ntwari was in the spotlight during Chiefs’ recent loss to Mamelodi Sundowns in the Carling Knockout, when the Glamour Boys lost 4-0, with calls from a section of fans to drop him.

Chiefs also have Brandon Petersen, Bruce Bvuma and Bontle Molefe as options in the goalkeeping department in case Nabi wants to shake up things.
