Ex-Pirates midfielder on what Bucs need to end title drought

Former Orlando Pirates midfielder Thabo Rakhale believes consistency is the only way the Buccaneers can end their long wait for a PSL title following their brilliant start to the season.

Pirates are the only side to have won all their league games so far after managing a club record seven straight victories to move top of the table on 21 points, three more than perennial winners Mamelodi Sundowns.

It is a run that has got their fans excited over a possible end to their 12-year wait for a league crown but there have been doubts over whether they have the quality and depth to go all the way while also competing in cup games.

Rakhale, however, feels it is doable for Jose Riveiro’s men as long as they avoid dropping ‘silly’ points.

“I’m happy to see the team doing well, playing exciting football, and it’s even enjoyable to watch them,” Rakhale told FARPost.

“I think consistency will play a huge role in terms of Pirates winning the league because so far, they are playing so well. A lot of teams will be targeting to spoil the ship they are sailing on. The chances of them winning the league are there, and though it will be difficult, I would personally love to see them lifting that trophy.

“I mean, with all the trophies they have won lately, it’s only fair for them to get the major one [league title]. I hope all goes well for them to clinch that.”

Pirates have looked formidable this season given they have already won the MTN8 and suffered just one loss from 15 games in all competitions.

Besides their impressive league form, they also made it to the group stages of the CAF Champions League for the first time since 2019, with their opening match being played in Algeria on Tuesday against CR Belouizdad.
