Explained: What is eating Chiefs despite Nabi’s firing early in the season?

Kaizer Chiefs are experiencing their worst run currently, having lost five of their last six outings across all competitions.

The defeats have seen the Soweto giants crash out of the Nedbank Cup and CAF Confederation Cup. The last three losses in a row have also seen the Glamour Boys lose ground in the Premier Soccer League race.

Amakhosi are currently placed fifth on the table with 30 points from 18 games, 11 points behind leaders Orlando Pirates, who have played a game more. It will be a massive task to beat both Bucs and the defending champions, Mamelodi Sundowns, to the crown.

However, it did not begin a couple of days or weeks ago, according to the former club’s custodian Brian Baloyi. The management has been faulted fo letting Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze to handle the team when Nasreddine Nabi was let go.

It has never worked before

“The biggest mistake Chiefs made when Nabi left, was this thing of co-coaches. It has never worked, Chiefs tried it before with Doctor and Ace and looking back at that time, it was necessary because it was a short period,” he told Metro FM.

“Sundowns tried it for a very long time but at the end, you can’t have two drivers driving the same car at the same time. Even if you have a 14 ton truck that goes, transporting [products], if there’s two drivers the other one will take a break, the other one will drive.

“At the end of the day, this is football and then you have co-coaches. At some point, there’s egos, at some point and players get confused with different messages. Players take instructions from the leader and it’s clear there’s leadership challenge at Chiefs at the moment,” Baloyi added.

After falling against Richards Bay by a solitary goal, the next assignment for Chiefs will be on Sunday, March 15, versus Durban City at the FNB Stadium.
