The South African Under-17 men’s national team, known as Amajimbos, are heading to the FIFA U-17 World Cup Qatar 2025 with a clear mission: not just to participate, but to compete fiercely and make a lasting impact on the global stage.

Coach Vela Khumalo and his squad departed South Africa on Thursday afternoon, bound for Qatar where the tournament kicks off on 3 November and runs until 27 November 2025.

This year’s edition marks a historic expansion to 48 teams, with matches played across eight pitches in the Aspire Zone complex in Al Rayyan.

Before their departure, the South African Football Association (SAFA) hosted a farewell breakfast attended by Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, SAFA President Dr Danny Jordaan, CEO Lydia Monyepao, NEC Member Job Mchunu, SAFA staff, and members of the media. The Premier handed over the national flag to the team, urging them to carry the hopes of millions.

“Go there and make us proud. I have no doubt that you will,” said Premier Lesufi.

“You have a big responsibility but also a very big opportunity,” added Dr Jordaan. “We want you to go and enjoy yourselves, focus, be disciplined and seek glory for the country.”

Captain Kamohelo Mareletse echoed the team’s ambition, saying they are inspired by Morocco’s recent triumph over Argentina in the FIFA U-20 World Cup, and are determined to emulate that success.
