From Gravel to Grass: Nemtajela On brink of dream start for Bafana Bafana

Fairy tales are often fictional stories that spark children’s imagination, but the rise of Orlando Pirates‘ Masindi Nemtajela is a real-life story that deserves to be told.

It’s a tale that can inspire kids in the townships to keep believing and working hard because, with the right attitude and effort, the big break is possible.

Nemtajela recalls that not long ago, he was playing on a gravel pitch. Today, he’s part of the national team and in line for a staring berth against Zambia in an international friendly.

Nemtajela's rise

“I’m really grateful for what’s happening to me since I started playing football. My journey wasn’t easy. I started at Mahlobo, as you mentioned, playing on gravel,” said the Orlando Pirates midfielder.

“But things happened quickly. I was in the NFD, then the next season I was in the PSL. In my second season, Pirates signed me, and after just a few months and about six games, my name was called for the national team. I’m grateful, it shows the hard work I put in during training is paying off.”

When asked about cementing his place in the national team and the possibility of going to the World Cup next year, Nemtajela said this is an opportunity to fight for the nation.

“I thank coach Hugo Broos for the opportunity he gave us. I’d love to see myself fighting for the nation at the World Cup. The coach gave us a chance, it’s now up to us,” he concluded.

The Orlando Pirates midfielder Nemtajela, who has enjoyed a rapid rise from playing on gravel pitches to competing in the PSL, now stands on the brink of earning his maiden international cap, a moment that would mark another milestone in his inspiring journey.
