Cause for concern? Furious Broos questions Bafana’s mentality after Jamaica draw

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has hit out at his players for a poor display against Jamaica in their friendly match on Saturday night.

South Africa played the Reggae Boyz behind closed doors at Estadio Hidalgo in Pachuca, Mexico where the team is based and could only manage one goal before conceding.

After a goalless first half, Lyle Foster broke the deadlock for Hugo Broos’ men but Jamaica equalized later through Dwayne Atkinson but Broos was fuming after the match.

“The performance was not what I expected,” Broos said as quoted on the SAFA website.

“I think we have to analyse the game very well and see what was really wrong and try to make it better in the next few days so that we are ready for the first game against Mexico.”

While he feels his team is edging closer, Broos is worried that his players are not showing the right mentality, five days before they play their World Cup opener against co-hosts Mexico.

“I thought we were close (to getting to where he wants the team to be before the opening match), but again, it was, for me, a disappointing game this afternoon,” he added.

“So, yes, I have to look at what went wrong. I think it was also a matter of mentality. We have to do more, much more, than what we did this afternoon to have good results in the World Cup in the next few weeks.”

South Africa will play the opening match of the World Cup on Thursday, June 11 against Mexico at the Azteca Stadium, looking to begin on a positive note before matches against Czechia and South Korea.
