Midfielder George Matlou will not wait long before landing a new club following his release from Kaizer Chiefs.

‎Chiefs confirmed Matlou’s departure on Wednesday, bringing an end to the midfielder’s four-year spell at Naturena.

”George Matlou’s contract will not be renewed when it expires at the end of June 2026,” Chiefs said via a club statement.

“The 27-year-old attacking midfielder joined the Glamour Boys from Swallows FC in July 2022 and played an important role in the squad that lifted the Nedbank Cup during the 2024/25 season.”

We thank George for his commitment and contribution to Amakhosi and wish him well in his future career.”

‎However, just over an hour since news of his exit was announced, it emerged that Matlou is in advanced talks with PSL side Stellenbosch FC.

The 27-year–old has endured a tough time at Chiefs since joining the club from Swallows with injuries limiting his game time.

‎In the 2025-26 season, he made just six appearances, having come close to leaving after which he was given a stay of execution, coming after he had stayed out for nine months before returning to action in the second half of the 2024-25 campaign.

‎Chiefs have opted against extending his stay following the end of his contract and according to SABC, Stellenbosch have pounced.

‎Stellies coach Gavin Hunt feels Matlou can strengthen his midfield with talks reportedly at an advanced stage over the signing of the Soweto-born star.

‎Matlou leaves Chiefs after making 46 appearances in all competitions in his stay at the club and will hope for a successful chapter in the Cape Winelands, potentially rediscovering the form that attracted the Glamour Boys four years ago.
