Kaizer Chiefs legend Doctor Khumalo has fired a warning to midfielder George Matlou following his antics when Orlando Pirates suffered CAF Champions League elimination.
Pirates were knocked out by Congolese side St Eloi Lupopo in the second preliminary round last October with the second leg at Orlando Stadium being an ill-tempered match that saw defender Dieumerci Mukoko rile the Bucs players and supporters.
Lupopo would win on post-match penalties after a 3-3 draw on aggregate and after the second leg, Matlou was captured mimicking Mukoko’s antics in a bid to annoy Pirates fans.
Khumalo advises George Matlou
Khulamo feels Matlou should have done better as he is burning his bridges when he still has many years to play.
“This is a lesson for any player, not particularly for George, but you don’t have to worry about what other people are doing or saying, just be yourself,” Khumalo told the media on Tuesday.
“Don’t say things that will jeopardise or have a negative spin on your brand. I know he’s a big boy with a big heart, but you don’t talk like that and say things like that.

“You might be playing for a different colour or team, but you need to remain humble and remember that these other brands are well-established. They have carried the history of this country and produced players.”
Matlou has found playing time difficult at Chiefs in the last two seasons with just five appearances this term, two starts, having been handed a one-year contract extension when his deal expired at the end of the 2024-25 campaign.
It appears that he is in the last months of his Chiefs stay and might need to watch what he says and does to avoid annoying potential suitors.
