George Matlou: Out-of-contract Chiefs star wanted by PSL club

George Matlous looks to be heading towards the exit door at Kaizer Chiefs but according to reports, the midfielder may not wait long before he lands a new club.

Matlou is coming to the end of his contract at Chiefs this month and given his injury record, the Glamour Boys are reported to be keen to offload him and create room in the squad for new arrivals.

However, according to Soccer Laduma, Matlou is attracting interest from Sekhukhune United who are keen to add him to the squad under coach Erik Tinkler.

“At the moment the club is looking at different players who the technical team has identified for next season and George Matlou is believed to be one of them,” a source told Soccer Laduma.

“They are monitoring the situation at Kaizer Chiefs first as they have apparently heard that he will be released and if it's like that, then he will be a free agent as the talks will be between the player and his representatives and Sekhukhune United.

“So that is what they are apparently monitoring before they can take the next step,” the source further said.

That would be a soft landing for the former Moroka Swallows central midfielder who has seen injuries disrupt his three-year stay at Chiefs.

What has Matlou contributed to Amakhosi?

Matlou joined Chiefs ahead of the 2022-23 season and was handed fresh terms last season but a nine-month injury layoff saw him return to action late, managing 15 games since he came back in January, while providing two assists.

Because of this, Chiefs are believed to have decided to cut ties with the 26-year-old when his contract expires officially at the end of this month.

“From the way things are, he won't be playing for Chiefs next season. Apparently, they are just waiting for the contract to officially come to an end on June 30 then he will be free to join a team of his choice,” another source told Soccer Laduma.

Matlou has played 40 matches in all competitions, providing three assists, since joining Chiefs.
