Golden Arrows vs Orlando Pirates: Preview, team news, time and where to watch

Published on by

Orlando Pirates will be looking to bounce back to winning ways when they visit Golden Arrows in the league on Wednesday evening.

Pirates came from behind to hold Mamelodi Sundowns to a 1-1 draw on Saturday, their first stalemate in the PSL so far this term, but they will be looking for all three points away to Manqoba Mngqithi’s side.

The Buccaneers had won all their six games prior to Saturday’s match which had left them just three points shy of leaders Sundowns and with two matches in hand over the Brazilians, they can edge closer to the log leaders with victory away to Abafana Bes’thende.

However, they will have to be wary of an Arrows team that has already beaten Sekhukhune United and Sundowns this season, two of the three top teams on the table.

Form guide

Pirates come into the match on the back of just one defeat in 16 matches in all competitions, a formidable record that includes 13 wins with just two draws over that period.

The Soweto giants last tasted defeat in the league on matchday two on August 12 when they lost 2-0 to Marumo Gallants, having started the season with a 1-0 defeat to Sekhukhune, and since then, they had won in the PSL until last weekend, a run of six straight victories.

What is more, Pirates had not conceded over that period, meaning they have only let in one goal in seven matches, heading to the game against Arrows.

Meanwhile, Mngqithi’s team have also been in good form with just one loss in their last six games across all competitions, all the others being wins.

In the league, they have played 11 games, winning five, drawing one and losing five to leave them in eighth spot but after their wins over Sundowns and Sekhukhune, they would be looking to add Pirates to their list of casualties which will see them move to 19 points, same as Abdeslam Ouaddou’s side.

Head-to-head

Pirates have totally dominated this fixture, winning their last six meetings while they are unbeaten over the KwaZulu-Natal side in eight matches. That includes a 2-1 win away and 3-0 triumph at home last season with Arrows’ last victory over Pirates coming in February 2021.

Team news

Pirates will still miss Relebohile Mofokeng and Simphiwe Selepe who are nearing a return from injuries but youngster Cemran Dansin is in line to start after his stunning first-half volley drew the Buccaneers level against Sundowns.

Patrick Maswangayi and Sipho Mbule could return to the starting XI on Wednesday after starting on the bench on Saturday.

What have they said?

“The truth is, we are still in the building phase, and we should not be carried away. I want to build a stronger pace that must be able to last for as long as possible, regardless of what happens in the team.”

“The boys are responding, and a lot of young boys that have not been seen, and that’s very encouraging for me. The culture of working very hard – I think that’s what I have brought into the team, and everybody understands that. [It’s] not just about the ability to play, but the ability to run because the team works very hard.” – Golden Arrows coach Manqoba Mngqithi
