Grave mistake? How Chiefs refused to sign Mofokeng

Orlando Pirates youngster Relebohile Mofokeng has been making headlines owing to his consistency for the team.

He has made rapid development since making his senior team debut late in the 2022/23 Premier Soccer League campaign. Apart from his glittering performances for the Sea Robbers, the 20-year-old has been drafted into the national team Bafana Bafana.

However, it has emerged that Kaizer Chiefs missed a massive chance to sign the attacker before he was eventually snapped by their old rivals.

In his interview on 947's MSW, renowned sports photographer Pitsi Matlou, commonly referred to as Vino Snap, has explained how the Glamour Boys could have easily secured the services of the player who was 13 at the time.

“With Rele, I first spotted him, I think he was 13, I remember calling some of the scouts at Kaizer Chiefs to say, ‘Hey, guys you need to come to Sharpeville, there's this young boy here doing magic,'” he recalled.

“Fast forward it's 2022, he's at School of Excellence but I'm hosting a tournament and one of the teams invited him, fast forward I'm seeing talent I've never seen before.

“Even on my posts I told them I'm seeing the prime Thulani Serero in this kid. So ‘my people in football please come do something with this boy'. Our relationship [with Mofokeng] is good. I'm a supportive person, Rele doesn't owe me anything.

“I did that through my own will. Seeing him do what he's doing now makes me really happy,” Matlou concluded.

Patrick Maswanganyi is another Bucs star that Chiefs refused to sign but is now delivering for the Buccaneers.
