South Africa legend Benni McCarthy was on the touchline as his team Harambee Stars suffered a humiliating 8-0 loss against Senegal on Tuesday night in Turkey.

Former Liverpool star Sadio Mane scored a hat-trick as Nicholas Jackson grabbed a brace, while Ibrahim Mbaye, Malick Douf were also on the scoresheet as the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations champions showed their class.

This was Kenyas's biggest loss since 2021 when they fell 5-0 against Mali in the 2023 AFCON qualifiers.

It was Benni McCarthy's sixth loss since taking over as Harambee Stars, having won as many games and three draws across all competitions.

Unhappy FKF President Hussein Mohammed reacts to the loss

Football Kenya Federation President Hussein Mohammed has now promised drastic changes to help the team build for the future.

“Truth be told, today is a bad day in office,” Mohammed wrote on his X account.

“The results from today’s games are a wake-up call to us. To play and compete against the best in the world requires deliberate investment in a serious and professional technical team and player development programs.

“We have no excuses. I apologise for these results. We shall fix it. We will review our policies, operational procedures and key performance indicators of all staff starting from the grassroots and working our way to all National teams,” Mohammed concluded.

McCarthy has the mandate to coach Harambee Stars until the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations where the country will co-host alongside Tanzania and Uganda.
