Former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brian Baloyi has advised George Matlou to ensure he cleans up his image quickly before his reputation is damaged.
Matlou has become a figure of fun and ridicule in equal measure due to his social media activities and antics away from the pitch which have delighted Chiefs fans but not gone down well with rival supporters.
One of those was when Chiefs won the Nedbank Cup after beating Orlando Pirates in May, the midfielder celebrating for six days while wearing his matchday kit and medal.
Matlou riled Pirates fans with Mukoko pose
He also angered Pirates fans in October when he mimicked the antics of St Eloi Lupopo defender Dieumerci Mukoko who riled Pirates during their CAF Champions League game at Orlando Stadium as the Buccaneers exited the tournament.
That has made Matlou a figure of hate among rival fans, especially those who support Pirates, and Baloyi feels it could prove costly in future if the former Moroka Swallows star does not change.
“Before even the game [Chippa United vs Kaizer Chiefs], if you look at the social streets, especially Pirates fans are giving him a hard time,” Baloyi said on SoccerBeat.
What has Baloyi told Kaizer Chiefs star?
“They have given him a new nickname as well. They call him a video boy now. He will have to work hard to clean his image on the field and he brought it to himself and unfortunately, he will be the one to work hard and to get back to focusing on the field.”
Matlou is one of the fringe players at Chiefs and has made just four appearances this season with Wednesday’s goalless draw against Chippa United being his first start of the campaign.
The 27-year-old came close to leaving Chiefs at the end of last season but earned a stay of execution this term although his future at Naturena remains unknown beyond 2025-26.
