Kaizer Chiefs make surprise decision on George Matlou’s future

Kaizer Chiefs have reportedly opted against cutting ties with midfielder George Matlou whose contract expires on June 30.

Matlou was reported to be on his way out of the club after an injury-ravaged three-year period with the midfielder also admitting that he was helpless over the situation although he expressed a desire to stay.

Now, Chiefs are reported to have had a change of heart and opted to give him a short-term deal, according to iDiski Times.

The midfielder, a workhorse blessed with great dribbling abilities, has not been able to fully display his talents in a Chiefs shirt as injuries have limited his appearances, and he returned in January after another long spell out that saw him not play for nine months.

With his contract coming to an end and his injury record, it was not certain if Matlou would be given a stay of execution and he was left counting on prayers which look to have been answered.

“Yes, my contract is coming to an end this coming June. But I am going to leave that to God, as I said, because I am one person who grew up in church. So, I will give everything to God,” Matlou told KickOff in May.

“Of course, most definitely to the technical team, to everyone, to the board and staff, to give me an opportunity if they do. It's football, but I'm not going to plan for the future now.”

The former Swallows midfielder had seen his initial deal end after the 2023-24 campaign, before Chiefs extended it for a further year, and he went on to make 15 appearances in all competitions since his return in January, providing a couple of assists.

Overall, Matlou has made 40 appearances for Chiefs in his three seasons at the club while providing three assists.
