‘He proved to his Sundowns coach’: Broos on Mokoena’s performance against Congo

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has reacted to Teboho Mokoena’s spectacular performance that saw him grab a brace against Congo Brazzaville.

South Africa secured three points after a 5-0 victory over The Red Devils in the AFCON qualifying match at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Friday evening.

The 27-year-old midfielder netted both of his goals in the first half, showcasing an impressive display despite having had limited playing time at Mamelodi Sundowns under the new management of coach Manqoba Mngqithi.

Broos says he is confused why the former SuperSport United man hasn’t been getting game time at club level.

He believes that Mokoena's performance on that day was sufficient to demonstrate to Mngqithi that he deserves a regular position in the starting lineup.

HUGO BROOS SAYS MOKOENA MADE A STATEMENT TO MNGQITHI

“I’ve known Teboho for two years now and the progress he has made is enormous,” said Broos.

“He has become a very, very good player. And I know that maybe today he was extra motivated to show to his coach at Sundowns that it was not right to put him on the bench or not to select him.

“So, this is what I like, not words, not talking but just the performance.

“But what I said a few days ago that I have to respect his decision but I can’t agree. I think today he proved it why I can’t agree that he mustn’t play at Sundowns.

“Okay, this is not our problem, also for Khuliso. I put my whole confidence in those players because I know what they are, I know how good they are and how important they are for the team.

“So I just pray to God that maybe at Sundowns they change their minds and the guys get opportunities to play because if that situation stays for for long term, I will have to take the decisions that I don’t like to make.”
