‘He’s Underrated’ – Cardoso on Sundowns Star

Following a commanding 3-1 league victory against Durban City on Saturday, Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has publicly expressed his high regard for midfielder Marcelo Allende, stating that the Chilean is an underrated and high-quality player in the South African football landscape.

Allende was instrumental in the defending champions' comeback win. With his team trailing 1-0, the midfielder netted the crucial equalizer, a goal that proved to be a turning point in the match. 

The play unfolded as Allende received a pass from teammate Tashreeq Mathews, demonstrating superb control and composure to turn inside the box and score. 

This pivotal goal not only brought his side back into the game but also set the stage for them to secure all three points, a result that keeps Sundowns within a point of log leaders Sekhukhune United on the standings.

During the post-match press conference, Cardoso was specifically asked to comment on Allende’s impact throughout the current season.

The coach used the opportunity to voice his opinion that the midfielder’s significant contributions are not fully appreciated by observers. Cardoso’s statement underscores his belief in Allende’s talent and consistent performance, positioning the player as a crucial element of the team’s strategy and success.

‘I’M HAPPY WITH WHAT HE CAN DO’

“I think it’s important that South Africa in general understands the level of player that Marcelo is,” he said on SuperSport TV.

“I think he’s a little bit underrated. He was never, until the moment, really recognized by the quality that he has. 

“As much as I am concerned I want that he feels pleasure and freedom to play and to express himself. And that freedom allows him, indeed, to look for other spaces, for other things. 

“And I stay pretty happy with what he can show, fantastic player that we all have the privilege to see playing football.”
