How Mbule convinced Pirates chairman Irvin Khoza to sign Apollis

Bafana Bafana international Oswin Appollis was a shock transfer from Polokwane City to Orlando Pirates in the South African winter transfer window.

The winger is now one of Bucs’ key players with a couple of assists and goals that have seen the Soweto giants win the MTN8, reach the Carling Knockout final and go top of the Premier Soccer League table.

In his recent interview with the media, the 24-year-old has now revealed how his former teammate at SuperSport United’s Development Academy, Sipho Mbule, contributed in the move to Pirates.

Mbule, who had fallen out with Sekhukhune United, was also among the new players that were brought on board by the club’s technical team.

“Yes, [Mbule] did that, he did tell the chairman that [I can come to Orlando Pirates]. But we came from SuperSport already and created a small bond. Even when I went to Polokwane, he always checked up on me to see if I’m okay,” he told the media.

“He’s always been funny, and there’s something that people don’t know about him, he likes playing FIFA. So that’s the one thing I have always done, playing FIFA. The character you see he’s always been having it.

“I think as a player, especially for S’phola, I think the more you put in the hard work, eventually you’ll get rewarded, and that is something that has been happening now. I’m happy to see him going with the team to AFCON,” Appollis added.

In the 21 games played for Pirates across all competitions, the South Africa international has scored five gials and provided six assists. But he is not yet satisfied with what he has done, so far.

“There is still a lot of work to be done. Obviously, there has been improvement in the team — all the players the club signed. For me, it’s about continuing to do my job. With the quality players around me, it makes things easier and helps me grow as an individual.

“As you can see, I’m not the only one improving — many players are stepping up because of the depth and quality we have in the squad,” Appollis concluded.
