Ex-Orlando Pirates star reveals how muti man nearly killed Bucs players

Muti has always been part of South African football for long and even in the modern world, it is still reportedly being used.

A traditional practice where black magic is used ostensibly to protect players, enhance their performances and intimidate opponents, there are teams who still practice it and a former Orlando Pirates star has revealed how it nearly turned tragic for them.

Former Pirates midfielder Hleza Mofedi has disclosed how their attempts to use muti almost cost them their lives when they played for the Buccaneers.

How muti man almost killed Pirates stars

Speaking to KickOff, Mofedi shared how they had enlisted the services of a muti man, who came to the team hotel to perform his rituals on the players before a key match, but it nearly turned tragic.

“A muti man almost burned us with boiling water at Pirates,” he shared.  “We were steam bathing besifutha in a hotel.”

“This guy put the old iron, the one that is used for ironing clothes, but not the electrical one, the old one. He put the iron in boiling water, and the water erupted like a volcano…we almost died that day. You should have seen when the blanket flew to the ceiling,” he added.

Mofedi makes wild claim over 2002 title

The Free State-born star then went on to sensationally suggest that muti actually works, claiming that it was one of the main reasons behind their league title win in 2002 under coach Roy Barreto.

“Yes, it does work,” he responded when asked if muti is real or a myth. “I saw that when we won the league under the late Roy Barreto. We used muti that season.”

Mofedi’s comments will generate further debate over a topic that has divided opinion not just in South African football but in Africa as well.
