Hunt dares Chiefs to break bank for Pirates’ punisher – ‘He will win you a treble’

The Democratic Republic of Congo striker Fiston Mayele has been a target for Kaizer Chiefs for several years owing to his quality and consistency in the final third.

Coach Nasreddine Nabi worked with the now-30-year-old in Tanzania with heavyweights Young Africans SC, commonly referred to as Yanga. While the forward joined Egyptian side Pyramids FC after leaving East Africa, the Tunisian tactician joined AS FAR Rabat in Morocco's Botola Pro League.

When Nabi joined Chiefs at the beginning of the season, he tried to bring on board the Congolese attacker. However, Pyramids refused to sell to the Glamour Boys who eventually opted to continue working with Ranga Chivaviro, Wandile Duba, Ashley du Preez and Christian Saile who eventually joined SuperSport United in the January transfer window, with Tashreeq Morris going the opposite direction.

Surprisingly, Mayele tried with Amakhosi a couple of years ago, but the technical team felt he was not up to the task. Former Chiefs coach Gavin Hunt still believes the striker can deliver for the Soweto giants if they give him a chance.

With Mayele, Chiefs will be invincible!

The former SuperSport United coach, who is currently a free agent, is convinced the Pyramids player is what Nabi and his team need.

“I think Fiston Mayele could be a 30-goal striker in the PSL. He’s not involved in all the touches on the pitch, he just plays in the box,” he said in his interview with SoccerBeat about the attacker who recently scored a brace to eliminate Orlando Pirates from Caf Champions League after a 3-2 win in the second leg.

“So, if you give him the service, he will score goals on his own by his movements, strength, and power. He’s very good at hitting the target; that’s why I think he’s a 30-goal striker.

“He’s 30 years of age, but there are teams in the PSL that don’t look for a long-term solution but a short-term solution. With the goals Mayele can score, Kaizer Chiefs will win the treble,” Hunt concluded.

Mayele's current deal with Pyramids expires in June 2026, meaning Amakhosi will have to negotiate with his current team.
