There has been a marked deterioration in the performance of Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Yusuf Maart since he was entrusted with the captaincy at the start of the season.
While Maart's performance may not have been at its peak last season, his current form appears to be a significant decline.
Maart previously captained the team on a few occasions last season while Keagan Dolly was injured. Nasreddine Nabi trusted him to continue with the responsibility to lead the team on the field.
Maart has been relegated to the bench on several occasions, suggesting a decline in Nabi's confidence in him.
Nabi attributed Maart's inconsistent performances in previous matches to the criticism he has been facing from fans.
However, the Tunisian coach still praised the player’s performances, emphasising the positive impact the captain has had in some of the games.
NABI ON MAART’S LACK OF CONFIDENCE
“Yes, I think this is a problem for confidence, for himself. Yusuf sometimes receives too many attacks. It’s difficult, mentally it’s difficult,” said Nabi after the match against Royal AM.
“I think the last game, and today, it’s not bad. He gave an excellent performance. Today, I think he gave a good performance.
“I want to see more confidence for himself, and he continues to progress.”
