The ex-SuperSport United tactician has conceded he made a mistake accepting the Glamour Boys job
Former Kaizer Chiefs Head of Academy Cavin Johnson regrets the decision to accept an offer to coach Amakhosi on an interim basis.
Coach Molefi Ntseki was appointed at the beginning of the 2023/24 season to help the Glamour Boys reclaim their lost glory in Mzansi football. Things didn't go as anticipated which led to his sacking after just 13 games across all competitions.
It was then that the management opted to hand the former Al Ahly assistant coach the caretaker role.
Chiefs failed to inspire under Johnson
During his spell as the main man at the helm of Amakhosi, they were eliminated from the Nedbank Cup and went on to finish 10th in the Premier Soccer League which was their worst-ever conclusion.
It got worse for Johnson as the Soweto giants opted to part ways with him just a couple of days ago.
“I do think that at one moment the [interim coaching role] call was too premature for me and if I could do it again I would say no, the fact that the chairman called me and he asked me [to take over],” he opened up to The Whistle Podcast.
“If it only went back to what I thought I did previously with Platinum Stars, with AmaZulu, I thought that ‘look, if you go with the same mentality and the same effort that you used at other teams it would work'.
“The culture at [Chiefs] is very different to any other PSL team because the chairman Dr. [Kaizer Motaung] has built such a big institution over the years, you have to start from the beginning, I believe that now.
“It’s easy to say ‘I believe that now’ give me the job now, at the beginning of the season and I’ll tell you exactly what to do and to don’t do at Kaizer Chiefs. But if you took it like I did then exactly what you said, you’re walking into a minefield and you don’t know where the bombs are.”
Amakhosi have since appointed Nasreddine Nabi as their new coach.
