Kaizer Chiefs coach Khalil Ben Youssef has showered praise on midfield linchpin Lebohang Maboe who has been putting up great displays so far.

Maboe had a good game at the heart of midfield as Chiefs beat Zambian giants ZESCO United 1-0 in the CAF Confederation Cup thanks to Glody Lilepo’s 14th minute goal on Sunday.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder has been doing his talking on the pitch and impressed yet again at the Moses Mabhida Stadium as Chiefs boosted their chances of making it to the quarter-final.

Maboe ran the show, playing in a two-man midfield alongside Siphesihle Ndlovu, and was among the man of the match contenders, having claimed the accolade on Wednesday when Chiefs beat Marumo Gallants in the league.

Commenting on the midfielder’s performance, Ben Youssef expressed his delight at having such a “smart player” who he says gives the team stability when he plays.

“I think Maboe is one of the important players for us, he’s a smart player and a professional player for us,” Ben Youssef said after the match.

“I’m so close to him, we discuss a lot about tactics and everything. Using him gives us a lot of stability also.

“Ndlovu and Mshini also give us a lot of solutions. All of them come with tactical quality. We manage them and choose which to play for this game.”

Maboe joined Chiefs as a free agent after seven years at Sundowns and his experience of playing in a title-winning side which also challenges for the Champions League every season is rubbing off on Chiefs.

The midfielder has so far played nine games in the black and gold of Chiefs, five in the league and four in the Confederation Cup, and his new team will be hoping that he stays fit as they challenge on multiple fronts.
