Kaizer Chiefs Finally Land Long-Term Target as 7th Signing

Published on by

Kaizer Chiefs have officially announced the signing of Asanele Velebayi, a player they have been interested in for a significant period. The midfielder's move to Amakhosi was facilitated by the PSL Dispute Resolution Chamber (DRC), which ruled in his favor and declared him a free agent after a legal dispute with his former club, Cape Town Spurs.

The legal battle began when Spurs were relegated to the amateur ranks of the ABC Motsepe League. Velebayi's argument was that his professional contract was no longer valid due to the club's loss of professional status. Despite Spurs’ efforts to retain the player, the PSL DRC’s ruling freed Velebayi, allowing Chiefs to sign him on a free transfer—a significant advantage, as they had previously failed to secure him before the start of last season.

This signing is a major boost for Chiefs, as they gain a talented midfielder who has been on their radar for a long time. Velebayi's arrival is expected to strengthen the squad and provide more options for the coaching staff.

The club is also keeping a close eye on a similar legal case involving Spurs youngster Luke Baartman. Just like Velebayi, Baartman is arguing that his contract is no longer valid due to the club's relegation. If the DRC rules in his favor and declares him a free agent, it is highly anticipated that he will also be announced as a new Chiefs player. This would represent a major influx of young talent for Amakhosi and could signal a new era for the club.

CHIEFS STATEMENT ON VELEBAYI

“Asanele Velebayi has officially joined Kaizer Chiefs,” the club announced via a statement.

“The Cape Town-born winger has signed a long-term contract, fulfilling his lifelong dream of wearing the Gold & Black colours of Amakhosi.

“We are happy to finally have Asanele with us,” says Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr. “He is a great addition, and we believe he will add significant value because he is a perfect fit for our game model and the culture we have here at the Club.”
