Kaizer Chiefs deserved to end the Premier Soccer League game against Mamelodi Sundowns with a man less, according to Victor Hlungwani.
With the Glamour Boys leading by a solitary goal on Saturday at the FNB Stadium, Zitha Kwinika appeared to plant his studs into Tashreeq Matthews’ back after clearing the ball.
Referee Alfred Jelly Chavani gave the 32-year-old defender a yellow card despite all associated with Masandawana demanding for a different colour. The game eventually ended 1-1, with Cassius Mailula canceling out Langelihle Phili’s strike.
The red card justification
“He kicked Tashreeq Matthews at the back with excessive force and brutality endangering the safety of an opponent,” the former FIFA and Premier Soccer League referee told Soccerzone.
“So, here he got a yellow card for this. This is serious foul play. It was supposed to be a red card not a yellow card,” he concluded.
Amakhosi are currently second on the table with seven points, behind Orlando Pirates, who have a better goal difference. Sundowns are on four points after two games.
Phili lauded but…
Meanwhile, coach Fernando Da Cruz has explained an aspect he feels Lingelihle Phili is needed to improve in future outings.
“I would like to see him continue to score goals,” the tactician conceded after the Saturday outing.

“And also when we defend a lot like today, I would like that when we recover the ball, he is able to keep the ball to support the team, as in the first half he lost a lot of balls. But in the second half, he was way better as he was able to support the team, and I’m very pleased that he scored.
“We need to give him time to adapt to Chiefs and to our game model, and it will be better step by step,” he concluded.
