Chiefs legend Doctor Khumalo makes huge Sundowns claim – ‘Whether we like it or not…’

Kaizer Chiefs legend Doctor Khumalo has termed Mamelodi Sundowns the best team by a country mile in South Africa, following their win over Orlando Pirates.

Sundowns blew the PSL title race wide open when they beat Pirates 2-1 thanks to new signing Brayan Leon’s brace although Patrick Maswanganyi pulled one back for the Buccaneers after the break.

The Brazilians had to do it the hard way as Pirates had about three clear chances that they missed before Leon scored from beautiful passes delivered by Nuno Santos and Aubrey Modiba.

It was a game which Pirates created loads of chances but failed to be efficient in front of goal while Sundowns utilised two of the three that they got to win the contest and narrow the gap to three points and still with a game in hand.

Khumalo declares Sundowns best team

After the match, Khumalo was left impressed by Miguel Cardoso’s team and made a declaration that they have no equals in the country.

“Sundowns whether we like it or not, it has to be said, they are the best team at the moment and I am not discarding Kaizer Chiefs or Pirates or disrespecting them. Sundowns are the best team,” Khumalo said on iDiski TV after the game.

His sentiments come days after he expressed his sadness at the possibility of Sundowns falling off, saying that would be catastrophic for South African football and Bafana Bafana.

“They are going through a phase, it’s football problems, so I just hope and wish they overcome that and become the Sundowns we know,” Khumalo said last week. “They make the PSL exciting and produce players for South Africa – we can’t celebrate when Sundowns have problems.”

“I’m praying and hoping they resolve their problems, we can’t afford to lose Sundowns, especially on the continent. Remember, Sundowns are so important to us. When the draw was made for the World Cup, they asked the Mexican coach; what do you think of South Africa?” the Amakhosi legend asked.

“He was talking about South Africa and answered by saying, ‘I saw Sundowns in the FIFA Club World Cup’ with this and that, you understand what I mean?”
