Former Kaizer Chiefs striker Marks Maponyane has questioned the leadership qualities of captain Yusuf Maart who has been the skipper at the club since the start of this season.
The midfielder was handed the armband by coach Nasreddine Nabi and has played 31 matches this season enduring mixed fortunes.
However, with Chiefs struggling for consistency, questions are now being asked whether Maart is the right man to lead the squad on the pitch as his critics claim he lacks the qualities to be captain.
Maart’s leadership qualities questioned

Maponyane, who played for Chiefs for 10 years from 1981-1991, has cited Maart’s performance in last weekend’s Soweto Derby, when Amakhosi lost 2-1 to Orlando Pirates, as proof that the former Sekhukhune United midfielder is not captain material.
“You cannot leave this discussion without criticising the captain of Kaizer Chiefs. How can you have a captain who has no leadership skills? Like I saw last time, he tried a crossfield pass and it ended up in row 45,” Maponyane said on Radio 2000.
“I mean, you can’t do that. You have to measure it or aim it at your teammates or the other side of the field. So, those are the things that make you think that a simple pass to your wide teammate cannot end up in the stands. That doesn’t make sense to me.
What has the Chiefs skipper offered?

“There are no leaders in this team, and the reason is simple: you cannot lead when you are not confident, and you cannot be confident when you are not winning.”
Maart has been one of the most reliable players for coach Nabi this season, playing 31 games, scoring three goals and providing as many assists.
However, Chiefs remain in ninth position in the league with two games to go although they have a chance to end their 10-year wait for a trophy if they beat Pirates in the Nedbank Cup final on Saturday.
