Kaizer Chiefs lose ground in title race as Orlando Pirates go nine clear at the top

Published on by

Kaizer Chiefs dropped valuable points in the DStv Diski Challenge title race after being held to a 0-0 draw by TS Galaxy on Saturday.

The result leaves Amakhosi in fifth place on 27 points after 16 matches, although they still have a game in hand following their recent European tour, a reward for winning last season’s championship.

Amakhosi are now winless in two matches after they lost to Marumo Gallants last week.

Pirates Strengthen Their Grip at the Top

Orlando Pirates strengthened their position at the summit with a 2-1 victory over Sekhukhune United. The win moves the young Buccaneers to 43 points, extending their lead to nine points over second‑placed Stellenbosch. Pirates have been remarkably consistent throughout the season, and their latest result further reinforces their status as clear favourites for the title.

Stellenbosch Fight Back to Go Second

Stellenbosch, who have endured an unusually inconsistent campaign by their standards, delivered a spirited second‑half display to defeat Magesi 4-1. Stellies trailed 1-0 at halftime but turned the match around in commanding fashion, showcasing resilience and attacking sharpness. The win lifts them from fifth to second on the standings as they continue to rebuild momentum.

Seven-Goal Thriller Steals the Show

Richards Bay and Golden Arrows produced the match of the day in a thrilling seven-goal encounter. Arrows emerged victorious despite a ferocious second‑half fightback from Richards Bay, who scored all their goals after the break. Arrows held on under pressure to secure a dramatic and entertaining victory in one of the standout fixtures of the season.

Sunday’s Fixtures: High Stakes Across the Table

Sunday’s programme promises more drama with several crucial matches on the card. Title hopefuls Mamelodi Sundowns face Siwelele in what is expected to be a fiercely contested encounter, with both sides aiming to close the gap on the league leaders. A win for Sundowns would elevate them to second place, seven points behind Pirates, while a Siwelele victory would take them to 35 points, also into second, eight points off the top.

Further down the table, Chippa United meet fellow strugglers Durban City in a pivotal relegation battle. Both teams are desperate for points as they fight to climb out of the danger zone. Meanwhile, Marumo Gallants head into their clash with AmaZulu buoyed by last weekend’s shock 2-1 win over champions Kaizer Chiefs. AmaZulu, on the other hand, will be looking to rebound after suffering defeat to Golden Arrows.

Orbit College Face Tough Test

Concluding Sunday’s fixtures, newcomers Orbit College, who produced an emphatic 4-0 victory over Chippa United last weekend, face a challenging test against Polokwane City. Orbit have been one of the season’s surprise packages, and the encounter will provide another opportunity to assess whether their strong form can be maintained.
