Former Orlando Pirates winger Tlou Segolela has advised Kaizer Chiefs forward Mduduzi Shabalala to use the Soweto Derby as an opportunity to convince Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos that he is good enough to go to the World Cup.

“The two most influential players will be Shabalala and [Relebohile] Mofokeng. They are expected to be the match deciders and will likely light up the game. Both players have much to prove. With the upcoming World Cup, this game presents an ideal opportunity for them to secure their places in the national squad,” Segolela told KickOff.

“Among the front three of Chiefs, which is Wandile Duba, Flavio Silva, and Shabalala, it is Shabalala who fosters understanding among them. Therefore, he should look at this match as his ticket to the World Cup.”

Derby stats that should worry Kaizer Chiefs

Kaizer Chiefs visit Orlando Pirates in the Soweto Derby on Sunday, April 26 but the numbers look very grim for the Glamour Boys.

This is because in the last 10 meetings between the two, Pirates have won seven with Chiefs managing just three wins.

Chiefs’ last win against Pirates was in the Nedbank Cup final in May 2025, which ended a run of five straight losses against the Buccaneers.

However, in the PSL, Chiefs have lost their last five meetings against Pirates, including in February, when they were thrashed 3-0, their biggest derby defeat in over 25 years.

Chiefs last beat Pirates in the PSL in February 2023 and it is a record they must change but which the Buccaneers will use to intimidate them before and during the match.

Kaizer Chiefs full-back Reeve Frosler has opened up about how his long spell out was tough on him but became beneficial to his family.

Frosler, who returned to action last week as Chiefs thrashed Magesi FC 4-1, has been absent since last October and admits it was difficult coping with the injury but it gave him time to be with his wife when they welcomed a baby.

“Being out injured is no fun for any player and I’m no different,” said Frosler as per iDiski Times.

“It was difficult from that point of view, but turned out to be good timing because my wife and I were expecting our second-born and being at home, I could help her around the house. It was a great feeling to get back on the field again, though.”
