Kaizer Chiefs coach slams pre-match brawl at Soweto Derby

Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Khalil Ben Youssef has slammed the ugly scenes witnessed at the FNB Stadium just before the Soweto Derby that was delayed twice at FNB Stadium on Sunday.

Chiefs played away to Orlando Pirates in a game that ended 1-1 but before the players went out for their warmups, there was a scuffle that disrupted them, something the Chiefs coach was not happy about.

“People are waiting to see the football, but what we saw before the game we can’t accept. I think if you want to win the league, if you want to lead the teams, you have to win with football, not like that,” he said as quoted by iDiski Times.

“It’s about safety, we spoke about safety. People from outside come and fight with our players, in our warm-up in our half.”

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen is confident that he will get a call-up to the Bafana Bafana squad for the 2026 World Cup if he maintains a high level of performance.

Petersen was Man of the Match in the Soweto Derby on Sunday after a number of key saves, including four in the first half as the game ended 1-1, and he feels such heroic acts will make it hard for coach Hugo Broos to overlook him.

“The only way to get there is to perform so for me, the most important thing is to put in the best performance week in, week out and at the end of the day, God is with me and that is what is at the back of my head and pushing towards that,” he told SuperSport TV.

Kaizer Chiefs coach Khalil Ben Youssef admits he knew Orlando Pirates would push so many numbers forward in the second half and that is how they took advantage to score in their 1-1 draw on Sunday which was achieved after they got behind the Buccaneers’ high defensive line.

“We knew that in the second half, they will take more risk because we knew that every point for them can cost the league,” he said after the game.

“So, they gave us a lot of space behind and this is the goal we scored, it was prepared, but when we recover, we will examine this.”
