Boost for Chiefs in race for Bafana international?

Orlando Pirates have ended their interest in signing former Sekhukhune United goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner, who is also a reported target for Kaizer Chiefs, after tying Melusi Buthelezi down for another year, FARPost has learnt.

The Buccaneers recently exercised their option on Buthelezi’s contract, a move that effectively brought an end to the club’s pursuit of Leaner, who had been identified as a potential replacement while the former TS Galaxy goalkeeper’s future remained uncertain.

Leaner is currently a free agent after leaving Sekhukhune United which opted not to renew his contract following a dip in form during the closing stages of the 2025/26 season. His exit comes as Babina Noko prepares for a new era under newly appointed head coach Cedric Kaze.

Pirates had shown strong interest in Leaner towards the end of last season after a string of outstanding performances that earned him a maiden call-up to the South Africa national football team.

Sundowns legend reveals struggling vs Amakhosi icon

Mamelodi Sundowns legend and former Cameroon international Roger Feutmba has revealed why the equally iconic Doctor Khumalo was his biggest nightmare in South African football.

Feutmba will always be credited as one of the PSL’ best imports because of his vision, passing ability and intelligence on the pitch.

“In football, there are opponents who will always be difficult to play against; it is just up to you to keep yourself focused,” admits the man fondly known as ‘The General’, in conversation with KickOff.

“In terms of teams, I would say Kaizer Chiefs was one of those teams that gave us as Mamelodi Sundowns many problems. But personally, the player who gave me the most trouble was Doctor Khumalo.

“He was equally intelligent, and it’s no coincidence that he has been given the title Dr. Doctor Khumalo — it’s because of his achievement. He deserves it. His contribution to football is massive. According to me, he was a player who was very difficult to play against because he was equally intelligent, tactical, and knowledgeable.

“Of course, Kaizer Chiefs lack such a player today — a player of his calibre, someone with the ability to check opponents’ shoulders and provide direction to control the rest of the team.

“As a playmaker, he ensured he controlled the game’s tempo. I believe he was a type of player like I was. But no matter how good I was, I still needed my teammates. We worked together to achieve a common goal,” he concluded.

What next for Morris?

The club is understood to view the former Sekhukhune United striker as an experienced addition capable of adding depth to the squad as they prepare for the demands of both domestic and continental football.

“Morris is now on the verge of joining Durban City, where he is set to reunite with Ben Youssef, who was part of the technical team during his time at Chiefs,” Kickoff reported.

The Citizens are strengthening their squad ahead of the 2026/27 campaign, a season that will also see them compete in the CAF Confederation Cup after lifting the Nedbank Cup last term.
