Latest news about Kaizer Chiefs in the last 24 hours, including Khalil Ben Youssef approached by CAF Confederation Cup team, Hugo Broos’ decisions regarding Brandon Petersen and Gift Links questioned & many more.

Ben Youssef to take over at Durban?

Nedbank Cup champions Durban City are on the verge of appointing former Kaizer Chiefs tactician Khalil Ben Youssef as their new head coach.

“Durban City management met with Ben Youssef earlier this week to discuss the vacant head coaching role, and an official offer has since been tabled,” iDiski Times reported.

“The Nedbank Cup winners reportedly had a short list of candidates that included former Cape Town City mentor Eric Tinkler and FC Saint-Éloi Lupopo head coach Guy Bukasa.

“The final decision now rests with Ben Youssef on whether he will accept the terms. The Tunisian tactician is well-acquainted with South African football, having spent the last two seasons in the country, first as an assistant to Nasreddine Nabi, and later stepping up as co-coach alongside Cédric Kaze at Amakhosi,” they concluded.

Benni opens up on Petersen & Links’ snub by Broos

Bafana Bafana legend Benni McCarthy has had his say on Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen missing out on the final squad for the FIFA World Cup, as well as the exclusion of Gift Links.

“There’s a couple of names that I would have [selected]. If I was in the position, I think I would have gone a different route especially with the Brandon Petersen case,” he told Sporty TV.

“I think with the season that Kaizer Chiefs had, he’s really been phenomenal, he’s been really an outstanding performer. “And then the exclusion of somebody that, I don’t know what’s the situation like there, Gift Links, you win the league in Denmark.

“That’s one of the toughest leagues, it’s one of the European leagues. And for the first time other than myself, that’s won a league in a European country, he’s gone and done it. Does it even come close to mentioning, maybe coach’s preference. But man at the end of the day, you put your pride and ego a little bit aside and reward people on merit.

“I feel that it was a hard one but other than that he has used the players he has selected throughout the campaign, so I understand the sense of loyalty to the players – who were sacrificing and being there for the national team, going into difficult places.

“And now all of a sudden because a few players have had excellent season, you’ve got to sacrifice players that have helped you get [to the World Cup]. Coach knows what he’s done and I’m no one to question that.”

Khune explains why Bafana Bafana

Former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune has revealed why the current generation have every chance to make history at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

“I think it (the group) favors Bafana this time around, there’s 48 teams, three points can get you out of the group stages and Bafana have what it takes. If you compare 16 years ago, we had less teams in the World Cup, we couldn’t qualify (for the knockout round) with four points,” Khune told African Football Connect YouTube Channel.

“We thought we were going to go through but back in 2010 we didn’t play the qualifiers, we were just playing preparation matches. 16 years later, Bafana had a lot of challenges but they managed to qualify.

“So we should be more proud of the 2026 (squad) than the 2010 squad, where we didn’t have to play qualifying matches but these ones deserve to be at the World Cup and they are not just there to add numbers, they are going to compete,” Khune added.
