How much was Lilepo sold?

Nasreddine Nabi missed out on reuniting with Kaizer Chiefs winger Makabi Lilepo at Raja Casablanca after the Moroccan giants failed to match the offer tabled by Libyan side Al-Ahly Benghazi.

The Tunisian coach, who previously worked with Lilepo at Naturena, had identified the Congolese star as one of his key transfer targets for the summer window, drawn by his personal knowledge of the player’s qualities and abilities.

However, Raja’s bid fell short, with their offer to Amakhosi lower than that offered by the Libyan side, who secured the deal for an estimated $700,000 (approximately R11 million), according to Info Sport.

Kaizer Chiefs rejected Raja’s offer on the basis that it did not match the player’s valuation, preferring to complete an agreement with Al-Ahly Benghazi.

The publication reported that it was a missed opportunity for the Green Eagles, in particular for coach Nabi, who had specifically requested Lilepo as part of his rebuild at the Eagles, relying on their existing relationship from their time together in South Africa.

Chiefs new target

Kaizer Chiefs’ reported interest in Golden Arrows attacker Ayabulela Maxwele may not have disappeared completely, with indications that the Glamour Boys are still looking to strengthen their attacking department before the transfer window closes.

Earlier reports in local media pointed to strong interest from Chiefs in the promising attacker, with suggestions that Arrows might have been aware of their pursuit, although no deal has materialised at this stage.

For now, however, Maxwele appears to remain in the plans at Abafana Bes’thende, having featured in their opening Betway Premiership fixture of the season, which ended in a goalless draw against Chippa United at the weekend.

Soccer Laduma reports that while the situation has gone quiet in recent weeks, the possibility of Chiefs revisiting their interest cannot be completely ruled out as the club continues to assess options in the market.

Mabasa on Chiefs’ move

Tshegofatso Mabasa has broken his silence on rumours linking him to Kaizer Chiefs, Pyramids and gulf clubs before his move to Morocco, admitting that negotiations took place but ultimately fell short.

“There were a lot of deliberations between a couple of clubs. It’s just unfortunate I don’t want to mention names and all of that, but yes there were negotiations, things happened, a few stumbling blocks here and there,” Mabasa told iDiski Times.

“But the obvious one for me, as I said before, has always been this one [move to Fes]. That’s why I’m saying I’m truly grateful for the effort they put in to make this deal happen, so kudos to them.
