Kaizer Chiefs warned the race for third place still open despite advantage

Kaizer Chiefs are the favourites to finish third in the Premier Soccer League race ahead of rivals AmaZulu and Sekhukhune United.

Currently, the Glamour Boys are third with 39 points from 21 games, two matches fewer than Usuthu and Babina Noko who are fourth and fifth respectively. The remaining part of the season is promising to be an interesting one as the trio will be aiming at getting the CAF Confederation Cup slot.

Sekhukhune had a good first half of the season where their consistency saw them even top the table for some time. But the second half of the campaign has not been good.

For instance, on Monday, they played to a 2-2 draw with AmaZulu, which was their fifth outing without a win. However, coach Eric Tinkler has not given up on possibility of finishing above Amakhosi.

“Second half of the season hasn’t been good, be at home or away. We also lost quite a few key players, very important players due to long term injuries,” the former Orlando Pirates coach told the media.

“A lot of new faces coming in after the CAF break. Still having to reach the level of conditioning that is required because they weren’t regulars where they were playing.

“Second half of the season, truth be told, we haven’t been good enough. I take responsibility for that as the head coach. Gotta find ways to win football matches and we didn’t do that. Be at home or away.

“What’s important now is how we finish. We still got seven games left. And potentially we can still reach our objectives. Top three, that’s been the objective. Still possible,” Tinkler concluded.
