With the 2025/26 domestic season set to conclude this Saturday, the Premier Soccer League (PSL) is already planning an unusually early start for the 2026/27 campaign.
The move is a strategic effort to manage a congested international football calendar.
According to Sportswire, the Betway Premiership is provisionally scheduled to kick off on August 1, 2026. In a significant shift from tradition, the MTN8 quarterfinals will follow a week later, rather than serving as the season’s curtain-raiser before league matches begin.

The early start is a direct response to the scheduling challenges that disrupted the current season, which was paused to accommodate the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) held in Morocco.
Next season, the league will benefit from the 2027 AFCON’s scheduling. The tournament, co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, is slated for June and July 2027. This allows the PSL a clear window to complete its domestic fixtures without interruption, though it must contend with a condensed qualification schedule.
The qualifiers for the 2027 tournament will run from September 2026 to March 2027, adding pressure to the domestic calendar.
Bafana Bafana’s path to AFCON 2027
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) draw has placed Bafana Bafana in Group D alongside Guinea, Eritrea, and co-hosts Kenya. The group presents a compelling storyline, as Kenya is managed by Bafana Bafana’s all-time leading goalscorer, Benni McCarthy.

With Kenya qualifying automatically as a host nation, only one other team from Group D will secure a spot at the finals, raising the stakes for South Africa.
Further complicating the schedule is the anticipated return of the African Football League (AFL), as recently confirmed by CAF President Patrice Motsepe. The PSL must await official dates for the AFL, as well as the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup, before it can finalise its own fixture list.
The league previously approved Mamelodi Sundowns’ participation in the inaugural AFL in 2023, where the team emerged as champions. How the PSL will balance domestic commitments with the demands of multiple continental tournaments remains a key point of interest for the upcoming season.
