Kaizer Chiefs secured Soweto Derby bragging rights when they beat rivals Orlando Pirates 2-0 to make it back-to-back wins in the DStv Diski Challenge (DDC) on Sunday.

Chiefs went into the game as the out of form team against a Pirates side that had only lost once in 10 matches this season but they brought out their A-game at the Solomon Mahlangu Stadium.

The match was nearly called off due to inclement weather as the rains had made the pitch water-logged but match commissioner Patrick Marametsi later cleared the venue to stage the high stakes clash after a delay.

The action on the slippery pitch witnessed lots of tackles but with nothing to show from either side in the first half until after the break when the first goal was scored.

Kamogelo Malepo scored the first goal for Chiefs in the 51st minute when he pounced on a loose ball following a poor pass from Pirates goalkeeper Lebo Mohalala which hit his defender before the Amakhosi youngster got possession and slotted into the bottom corner for his sixth of the season.

In the 68th minute, Chiefs nearly doubled their lead but missed and they almost got punished as Pirates went on the counter attack but Thuto Sesipi saw his diving header go over the bar.

The second goal for Chiefs would arrive from a set-piece 17 minutes from time when Naledi Hlongwane redirected Thulani Mabaso's freekick to beat the Pirates goalkeeper.

Moses Mphekgoane should have pulled one back for Pirates in the 79th minute but wasted the opportunity as Chiefs handed Pirates another Soweto Derby loss.

The win is the second on the bounce for Chiefs and their fourth of the season which sees them reduce their gap with Pirates to eight points from 11 games as they have now taken their tally to 17 with the Buccaneers still top of the table with 25.
