Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos conceded Kaizer Chiefs skipper Brandon Petersen was in his plans for the FIFA international double-header friendly against Panama.

However, the injury suffered while on duty for the Glamour Boys denied the custodian that chance. Renaldo Leaner and Ricardo Goss joined South Africa captain Ronwen Williams in the squad, with the national team drawing 1-1 with the Central American nation before falling 2-1 in the second meeting.

In the ongoing edition, the 31-year-old has played 30 games across all competitions, where he has managed 16 clean sheets. 13 of those have been in the South African top-tier, where he has also conceded nine goals from 19 fixtures.

Petersen has now opened up on the lost chance to impress coach Hugo Broos, and what he is planning to do to stand a chance of making the 2026 FIFA World Cup to be co-hosted by Mexico, Canada, and the United States.

“It’s disappointing, but for that moment. With the coach saying that, for me it’s an opportunity. I see it as an opportunity,” he told the media.

“In order for me to be there, I have to perform well at the club level. Six games to go. That’s where my focus is.

“For me, there’s no other way you can be picked by not performing at your club.

“That’s where my focus is, that’s where I need to concentrate on and finish this last six games strong. Whatever happens, happens. God is in control,” Petersen concluded.

On Sunday, Petersen is expected to be in goal as Chiefs play Pirates in the Soweto Derby at the FNB Stadium. The Glamour Boys lost the last meeting 3-0 and will be aiming for a positive outing to avoid a seventh consecutive PSL loss against their traditional rivals.
