Kaizer Chiefs Transfer News: Shock exit for Thabo Cele?

Kaizer Chiefs are making changes to their team to ensure they deliver in the 2026/27 season in the Premier Soccer League, CAF Confederation Cup and other domestic competitions.

After opting against retaining Cedric Kaze and Khalil Ben Youssef, Fernando Da Cruz was given the mandate to coach the team, getting an initial two-year deal. Already, the Glamour Boys have secured the services of defender Thabo Moloisane and goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner, who came in as free agents from Stellenbosch and Sekhukhune United, respectively.

Amakhosi have so far parted ways with Aden McCarthy (Sabah, Azerbaijan), George Matlou, Happy Mashiane, and Tashreeq Morris. Reports have it that Ashley du Preez is also not in the plans of the Soweto giants for the forthcoming campaign.

Nevertheless, the most shocking part is about Thabo Cele who is not part of the Glamour Boys squad that left for Europe to prepare for the new season.

Cele on his way out?

“Kaizer Chiefs and midfielder Thabo Cele are engaged in discussions over a possible early exit, although the player is prepared to honour the remainder of his contract should an agreement not be reached,” SABC Sport reported.

“Cele was a notable omission from the Amakhosi squad that travelled to Spain for their pre-season tour under new coach Fernando Da Cruz, despite having featured throughout the club’s preparations for the 2026/27 campaign.

“Information reaching the public broadcaster indicates the 28-year-old only learnt of his exclusion shortly before the team’s departure, having expected to be part of the travelling contingent,” they added.

Cele came in in January 2025 to bolster the team’s midfield, but he has not made the desired impact. Reports have it that if a permanent or loan move is not secured, Amakhosi will be forced to retain the midfielder.
