Khumalo questions Lilepo’s imminent Kaizer Chiefs exit – ‘It raises eyebrows’

Kaizer Chiefs legend Doctor Khumalo is surprised by the imminent departure of Congolese forward Glody Lilepo from the club.

Latest reports indicate that Chiefs have agreed a transfer fee with both Al Ahli Benghazi and Raja Athletic Club for the in-demand winger who has made no secret of his desire to leave Naturena after failing to settle into life in South Africa, with his family unable to join him since his arrival.

According to iDiski Times, offers were tabled from Al Ahli Benghazi, Al Nasr Benghazi, Asswehly SC, Raja and Wydad Athletic Club — however, only Ahli and Raja have had their approaches accepted. The player will now weigh up personal terms from both clubs before making a final decision.

Lilepo not part of Chiefs plans

Lilepo was left out of Chiefs’ pre-season camp in Spain and is not in the club’s plans for next season as he weighs which between the two clubs he will join and Khumalo is surprised that such a valuable member of the squad is being allowed to leave.

“Probably he [Lilepo] is seeing greener pastures when he goes to Al Ahli [Benghazi] and for them [Kaizer Chiefs] to have released him, probably there are internal problems that me and you do not know about,” Khumalo said on SABC.

Khumalo surprised by winger’s exit

“Who can release this kind of player because he delivered at Kaizer Chiefs and I thought he was going to be one of the lethal players for this season [2026-27] based on the players they have signed. But now, when you lose this kind of wing player and also a striker, it raises questions or eyebrows.

“But having said that, I wish him all the best of luck, he delivered.”

Lilepo joined Chiefs from Valenciennes in January 2025 in a reported R9-million transfer and contributed 15 goals and five assists in 56 appearances for the club, including a Nedbank Cup winners’ medal.
