Kaizer Chiefs signed Rwanda international Fiacre Ntwari in the most recent Premier Soccer League transfer window hoping to seal the inconsistencies in the goalkeeping department.
The former TS Galaxy custodian was set to take over from South Africa legend Itumeleng Khune whose contract was not renewed by the Soweto giants. The Glamour Boys did not have faith in Bruce Bvuma and Brandon Petersen who struggled to make a positive impact in the 2023/24 edition.
With Ntwari in goal, coach Nasreddine Nabi felt he had someone who would help in the build-up from the back, as well as help instill confidence in the otherwise shaky backfour.
However, it seems the 25-year-old might not be the man the Glamour Boys desperately needed if recent stats are anything to consider. The Amavubi star has conceded 11 goals in seven games across all competitions and kept just one clean sheet. Sometimes, his decisions in the danger zone have been wanting.
‘Focus on your path' Khune advises Ntwari and Chiefs keepers
“All the goalkeepers that are at Chiefs and in the Bafana team, Ronwen Williams is enjoying himself in the Bafana team and he never thought of Itumeleng Khune and other goalkeepers who came before me,” the 37-year-old told the media.
“But he is focusing on his own path and that is what I wish and hope for the Kaizer Chiefs goalkeepers, not to think too much of the goalkeepers who came before them. Let them focus on themselves, on their performances, and work hard at training because in matches things just become automatic.
“They happen as long as you put in your hard work at training. Hence, they say you play how you train. So, that is what I pray for, that Ntwari shouldn’t focus more on who came before him and who did what. He just has to focus on his game and on improving himself and the team and he will come right,” Khune concluded.
Nabi and his technical team have about three weeks to work on their weaknesses before Chiefs next game against Richards Bay.
