Kaizer Chiefs legend Itumeleng Khune insists Cape Town City did little to show their strong will to retain their Premier Soccer League status.
The Citizens had a poor season in South African top-flight football and were subjected to promotion/relegation play-off alongside Casric Stars and Orbit College, which was won by the latter, who will now be dining with the big boys.
According to Amakhosi legend, Itumeleng Khune, Cape Town City were not hungry to keep their place in the PSL after ending the play-off without a win. He now hopes they will get their feet at the Motsepe Foundation Championship and maybe get promoted next season.
‘Let Cape Town City redeem themselves'
“Yeah, I think they proved that they deserve to be relegated; I don’t know; they didn’t take the platform seriously. To play four games and not have a single win is so poor from Cape Town City,” the former South Africa international told SABC Sport.
“They should have shown the standard of the Premier Soccer League so that any team from the lower division could not match them. But they did match them.
“So, I think let them go to the Motsepe [Foundation] Championship and redeem themselves, and hopefully we will see them in the PSL (Betway Premiership) next year,” Khune concluded.
Cape Town City now joins Cape Town Spurs, who had been relegated a season earlier, meaning only Stellenbosch FC represents the Western Cape region in the Premier Soccer League.
It is even worse for Spurs, who failed to deliver in the second tier, which led to their relegation in the 2024/25 edition.
