Lekgwathi compares Pirates youngsters to Leremi and Cheeseboy

Published on by

Lucky Lekgwathi, a highly successful former captain of Orlando Pirates, has shared his thoughts on the club's current crop of young players, drawing parallels to former fan favourites Gift Leremi and Lebohang ‘Cheeseboy’ Mokoena.

Lekgwathi, who was a teammate of Leremi and Mokoena when they broke into the senior team in 2002 and 2003 respectively, sees flashes of their qualities in today's youngsters.

He specifically stated that Relebohile Mofokeng reminds him of ‘Cheeseboy’ Mokoena, while Mohau Nkota brings to mind Gift Leremi.

Lekgwathi lauded Pirates for their ongoing commitment to developing players from within, a tradition he witnessed with the likes of Joseph Makhanya, Leremi, and Mokoena, and one he believes continues under coach Jose Riveiro.

LEKGWATHI LIKENS PIRATES DUO TO LEREMI & MOKOENA

“One thing about Pirates, there’s continuity, they are playing with the same style of the old generation,” Lekgwathi told FARPost.

“Looking at 2002 and 2003 where Pirates were promoting the likes of Joseph Makhanya, Lebohang Mokoena. It’s coming back now.

“You see the likes of Rele [Mofokeng], he reminds me of Lebohang Mokoena and [Mohau] Nkota reminds me of Gift Leremi.

“So, I think Pirates don’t change too much even when the new coaches come in.”
