Lilepo wonder goal: Chiefs coach adamant it was not a fluke – ‘He had noticed that Arubi…’

Kaizer Chiefs coach Cedric Kaze has opened up on the decision behind Glody Lilepo to take aim at goal from distance before he scored his wonder goal against Marumo Gallants on Wednesday.

Lilepo scored a goal of the season contender when he took a shot from over 40 yards out and into the net as Chiefs beat Gallants 1-0 to move to second place on the PSL table.

The Congolese forward picked the ball on the left wing and fired in a stunning shot that sailed into the net with Gallants goalkeeper Washington Arubi not able to do anything to keep it out, having been off his line, when Lilepo hit the ball.

Did Lilepo mean to score?

A lot has been speculated over whether Lilepo meant to take a shot or he was bringing in a cross for one of his teammates to attack but Kaze says the goal was very much in the player’s mind after he learned how the Gallants goalkeeper likes to stay off his line.

“I don’t know if Lilepo meant it or not,” Kaze said via Radio 2000. “But actually, he told us at half-time that he was going to score in the match. He had noticed that Arubi always comes off his line. He said he wanted to put in more crosses and will try and score and that’s what happened.”

The goal has sparked debate over whether it is the best scored so far this season but Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie has already crowned it Goal of the Season.

Fans divided on Goal of the Season

“I don’t think we will see a better goal this season, jealous down,” McKenzie posted on X on Thursday.

Lilepo is in line to win the Goal of the Season award for January following his glorious strike but with other great strikes scored already and more yet to come, the season’s accolade will be a highly contested affair.

Orlando Pirates fans have already poured cold water on Lilepo’s strike, claiming Mbekezeli Mbokazi’s stunner against Siwelele FC in the Carling Knockout as well as youngster Camren Dansin’s volley against Mamelodi Sundowns are better than what the Chiefs winger scored.
