Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Cedric Kaze hailed the influence of his substitutes after Amakhosi edged Marumo Gallants 1-0 in their Betway Premiership clash in Bloemfontein on Wednesday night.
A moment of brilliance from Goldy Lilepo early in the second half proved decisive, as the Soweto giants claimed a valuable three points to keep their title ambitions firmly on track.
While pleased with the result, Kaze admitted Chiefs were below par in the opening exchanges and only found their rhythm after the break.
“We are happy with the three points, but the first half was not good enough. We were sloppy and a bit reactive. At half-time we told the players that if we really want the three points, we have to be more aggressive and play on the front foot,” Kaze told SuperSport TV.
The Chiefs co-coach felt the response in the second half justified that message, capped by Lilepo’s stunning strike.
“The second half was much, much better – and what a goal. That moment made the difference and we are very happy to take the win,” he added.
Kaze also reserved special praise for Siphesihle Ndlovu and Flavio da Silva, who were introduced just after the hour mark and helped swing momentum in Chiefs’ favour.
“In a game like this, with many 50-50 duels, some players can struggle. We were very happy with the contribution of Ndlovu and Silva. They stabilised the team and allowed us to be more threatening going forward” Kaze said.
Attention now shifts to the continent, with Chiefs set to turn their focus to their CAF Confederation Cup assignment on Sunday.
