Mamelodi Sundowns have once again swept the PSL monthly awards after Lucas Ribeiro and coach Miguel Cardoso were named Player and Coach of the Month for May respectively.

Ribeiro has also won the Goal of the Month, making it a double for the Brazilian playmaker, as Sundowns swept all three awards.

“This marks the third time this season that both Cardoso and Costa have claimed the monthly honours, a testament to their consistency and contribution to Sundowns’ successful Betway Premiership season,” a PSL statement said.

“Cardoso guided Sundowns to a perfect month, winning all five Betway Premiership fixtures in May enroute to the Tshwane giants’ eighth consecutive Premiership title.

“The Portuguese tactician emerged as the best coach of the month, edging out stiff competition from Richards Bay FC coach, Ronnie Gabriel as well as former Orlando Pirates coach, Jose Riveiro.”

Meanwhile, Ribeiro, who won the Golden Boot with 16 goals, scored three goals in May, one in the 3-0 thrashing of Stellenbosch on May 11, as well as a brace against Magesi FC as Sundowns completed the season with a 2-0 win.

“Costa’s third Betway Premiership Player of the Month was awarded to him ahead of equally strong contenders from his team-mates, Iqraam Rayners and Marcello Allende who were instrumental for the newly crowned champions,” the PSL further said.

“In addition to being voted the best player, Costa clinched the Betway Premiership Goal of the Month award – his third for this season – for a composed strike against Magesi FC on Downs’ last Betway Premiership fixture of the season.”

Costa played a key role as Sundowns won their eighth straight PSL title and he is favourite to be crowned PSL Player of the Season.
