PSL make major statement over 2024-25 Awards Gala

Published on by

The PL has postponed the 2024-25 Awards until further notice owing to Mamelodi Sundowns’ involvement in the CAF Champions League and FIFA Club World Cup.

The Awards Gala is normally conducted in June but Sundowns will be taking part in the expanded 32-team tournament that takes place between June 14 and July 13 in the United States just after their Champions League final.

With the PSL champions having a number of players who will be competing for the awards, the PSL has postponed the event until further notice.

What has PSL said over the Awards gala?

“Due to Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club’s participation in both the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup and the 2024/25 CAF Champions League Final, the League has taken the decision to postpone this season’s PSL Awards Ceremony,” the PSL statement said.

“The PSL, its Member Clubs, and all stakeholders in professional football across the country are united in their support for Mamelodi Sundowns as they fly the flag for South African football at these prestigious events.

“The League will communicate the new date and further details of the Awards Ceremony in due course.”

Sundowns have Lucas Ribeiro, Iqraam Rayners, Ronwen Williams and Teboho Mokoena who have been among the standout performers this season and are in contention for various awards.

Ribeiro, the PSL’s Golden Boot winner with 16 goals, is seen as hot favourite to claim the PSL Player of the Year Award after a brilliant season with last season’s best player Williams also in contention.

Sundowns play the first leg of their Champions League final against Egyptian club Pyramids at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday May 24 before the return match in Cairo on June 1 and then fly to the US for the Club World Cup, where they have group matches with Ulsan of South Korea, German giants Borussia Dortmund and Flamengo of Brazil between June 18 and 25.
